The Start-up of You – by Reid Hoffman, Ben Casnocha
The Start-up of You: Adapt to the Future, Invest in Yourself, and Transform Your Career, by Reid Hoffman, Ben Casnocha
Occasionally I come across a book that I wish had been available when I was in my early 30s because it would have reduced the time spent to achieve my goal. Reid Hoffman’s book “The start-up of YOU” is such a book. Hoffman is the Co-founder and Chairman of LinkedIn.
Hoffman begins by emphasizing that the Internet of everything has fundamentally changed the architecture of business and society. There is a new world of work, a networked world. He provides guidance on how to live, learn, and thrive in this new world.
The principal message is: individuals need to take control of their life and build a career that will enable them to have real impact. He suggests you take a start-up approach to building your life. Determine your life’s goal and modify it as opportunity, or a change in reality, requires. He recommends you start with an idea and over your entire career shape it into something truly remarkable.
Hoffman stresses that you need to develop and nurture a human network. He outlines how you can develop personal competitive advantage and how to pursue breakout opportunities.
I recommend this book to anyone who wants to stop thinking and behaving as indentured labour to a corporation/institution but rather as an entrepreneur fully in charge of their life’s work.
